Question 1: Write in your own words two or more sentences of what you understand by the word ‘marginalisation’.

Answer 1: Marginalisation is the process of pushing individuals or groups to the edges of society, making it difficult for them to fully participate in social, economic, or political life. It often happens due to factors like race, gender, disability, or poverty, leading to exclusion, discrimination, and limited access to resources and opportunities.

Question 2: List two reasons why Adivasis are becoming increasingly marginalised.

Answer 2: Displacement and Land Alienation: Adivasis are often displaced from their ancestral lands due to large-scale development projects, mining, and deforestation, which disrupts their traditional livelihoods and cultural practices.

Lack of Political Representation and Social Discrimination: Adivasis face systemic discrimination and inadequate representation in political and social structures, leading to their voices being ignored and their rights being neglected.

Question 3: Write one reason why you think the Constitution’s safeguards to protect minority communities are very important?

Answer 3: Constitutional safeguards are important because these communities are backward and are lacking at educational, social, and economic levels. To give them equal status in society these safeguards are required. For the progress of a nation, it is necessary that all parts of society should progress.

Question 4: Re-read the section on Minorities and Marginalisation. What do you understand by the term minority?

Answer 4: A minority is a community that is numerically small in relation to the rest of the population. A particular religious section which has a low percentage in population compared to the major religious community is called a minority.

The Constitution of India provides safeguards to linguistical and religious minorities as a part of its fundamental rights and ensures that minorities do not face any disadvantage or discrimination. In India, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, etc., are included as minorities.

Question 5: You are participating in a debate where you have to provide reasons to support the following statement: ‘Muslims are a marginalised community’. Using the data provided in this chapter, list two reasons that you would give.

Answer 5: The literacy rate of the Muslim population in India is the lowest. It is only 59%.
43.2% of Hindus have access to electricity while only 30% of Muslims have access to electricity. The above statistics support the statement that Muslims are a marginalised community in India.
Muslims are less educated. They have very little share in government jobs.

Question 6: Imagine that you are watching the Republic Day parade on TV with a friend and she remarks, “Look at these tribals. They look so exotic. And they seem to be dancing all the time”. List three things that you would tell her about the lives of Adivasis in India.

Answer 6: i. Adivasis led excluded life in different hilly and forest areas of India till middle of the nineteenth century or the dawn of British imperialism in India.

ii. Adivasis are not a homogeneous population. There are over 500 different Adivasi groups in our country. They are particularly numerous in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and in the north-eastern states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

iii. Adivasis practice ancestor worship and believes in all types of supernatural spirits like the primitive men.

Question 7: In the storyboard you read about how Helen hopes to make a movie on the Adivasi story. Can you help her by developing a short story on Adivasis?

Answer 7: Helen may find the following story useful. 

There used to be an adivasi community living their life freely in the forest. They take care of the forest and in return the forest provides them with all the necessary resources. One day, the government decided to start a ‘Development Project’ and ‘modernize’ the lives of the adivasi community. The people of that community were very happy earlier but soon they realised that they would lose everything they have in return to nothing, in this ‘Development Project’.

They protested and tried to raise their voices against the orders but nobody came forward to help them. Eventually goons were sent to beat and threatened the adivasi people to leave their land. The story ends with the adivasi family who used to have everything, now have nothing and are crushed under the stress and betrayal by the people in power.

Question 8: Would you agree with the statement that economic marginalisation and social marginalisation are interlinked? Why?

Answer 8: Yes, economic marginalisation and social marginalisation are interlinked. When a group is economically disadvantaged, they struggle to access basic necessities like education, healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities. This financial hardship often leads to social exclusion, as they may be unable to participate fully in society. Similarly, social marginalisation, such as discrimination or lack of representation, can limit access to economic opportunities, creating a cycle of poverty and exclusion.
