Fruits are important part of food of pre-historic nomads. Many fruits find reference in the ancient literature .The records date back to7000 B.C . Mention of some fruits like amla , mulberry, bael, phalsa, figs, grapes , lemon, mango, orange, banana , pomegranate in early medical works in Sanskrit Chakra Samhita and Sushrita Samhita.

Early man used wild fruits as food. But with the advancement of the civilisation he started cultivation of some fruit plants. Now fruit is a very profitable enterprise.

What is a fruit ?

A fruit is the part of a flowering plant that contains the seeds. The skin of a fruit may be thin, tough, or hard. Its insides are often sweet and juicy. Yet some fruits, including nuts, are dry. Fruits develop from the flowers of a plant. Fruits are an integral part of human diet and are prized as source of refreshment for their delightful flavour and aroma.

Is tomato a fruit ?

Some foods that people call vegetables are actually fruits. For example, cucumbers, squashes, and tomatoes are all fruits. This is because they all contain seeds, while true vegetables do not. True vegetables are the stems, leaves, or roots of plants

How to eat dragon fruit ?

Although it may look somewhat intimidating, dragon fruit is actually very easy to eat. Before cutting, wash the fruits thoroughly under running water. Place it on a cutting board and make two halves by cutting straight down or longitudinally with a sharp knife. By the way, the skin is not edible.
Option one is to use a spoon to eat the fruit out of the skin.
Option 2 is to remove the fruit’s flesh similar to an avocado. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Run a spoon along the edges of the skin and then scoop underneath to loosen the flesh. If the fruit is ripe, is should separate easily from the skin.
Option three is to peel the skin off and slice the fruit into small pieces.
Finally, use the hollowed out skin to make a decorative bowl for serving a fruit salad or dragon fruit ice cream.
