It is very difficult to control the ever rising problem of pollution in big cities like Kolkata , Delhi , Mumbai , Chennai , Kanpur and Bhopal.

What is Pollution

Pollution meaning : Pollution means entrance of harmful elements like dust particles , smoke , poisonous elements , bacteria etc. in our natural environment . These harmful elements are continuously into the air , water and soil and causing wide spread pollution.

Types of pollution

Kinds of Pollution : The main kinds of pollution are :-

Air Pollution ,
Water Pollution ,
Soil Pollution ,
Noise Pollution ,
Radiation Pollution.

Air pollution : Air pollution is mainly caused the smoke of industries , factories , motor cars , burning waste . Smoke releases SO2 into the air making it toxic. It is caused mainly due to chimneys, factory stacks, vehicles or something as common as ‘burning of wood’. Release of SO2 and other greenhouse gases into air causes global warming and has capacity to cause acid rain.

Global warming or emission of these gases has increased temperatures, erratic rains and droughts worldwide. This has heavily increased the cases of Asthma, Bronchitis and the more dangerous lung cancer, mainly in the metro cities. Air pollution is believed to end lives of over 20 lakh people every year – a study, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, says.

Water pollution : Water pollution is said to occur when toxic pollutants and particulate matter are introduced into water bodies such as lakes , rivers and seas. These contaminants . are generally introduced by human activities like improper sewage treatment and oil spills .Water pollution not only harms the aquatic beings but it also contaminates the entire food chain by severely affecting humans dependent on these. Water-borne diseases like cholera, diarrhoea have also increased in all places.

Soil pollution : Soil pollution Also known as Land Pollution, this occurs due to incorporation of unwanted chemicals in the soil due to human activities. Soil pollution depicts the contamination of soil due to the presence of toxic substances such as excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides , deforestation industrial waste etc. Food is a big contributor to landfill waste. Up to 40 percent of food produced in the United States is trashed each year, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Noise pollution : Noise pollution is dangerous to life . It is said that 85 decibels causes deafness and other diseases. It may lead to psychological problems like stress & hypertension. The common reasons behind noise pollution is the sound that comes from industry , planes and other sources that reaches beyond permissible limits.

Radioactive pollution : This is considered one of the most dangerous pollution because of its permanent effects. An unarrested upset in a nuclear plant , careless nuclear waste disposal, etc. It can cause cancer – skin, blood, infertility due to exposure, birth defects and blindness; It has the ability to permanently change soil, air and water – the major sources of life. It can even cause mutation in species which can propagate for ages.

Causes of Pollution

Man is more responsible for pollution than any other natural polluting agent like earthquakes , cyclones or volcano erruptions. The main causes of pollution are :-

  • Uncontrolled growth of population.
  • Heavy destruction of forests.
  • Establishment of new cities and industrial areas.
  • Rapid progress of industries.
  • Rapid progress of transportation.
  • Use of explosives in mining and wars.
  • Testing of atomic weapons.
  • Radiation from the Sun.

Effects of Pollution

Pollution is causing heavy damage to all the living beings . Some of them are :-

  • Air pollution is causing respiratory problems like Asthama.
  • Chloro – Floro – Carbonic compounds are making holes in the Ozone layer which protects the earth from the ill effects of infra – red rays of the sun.
  • Water pollution is causing diseases like dysentry and jaundice. It is also causing heavy damage to the marine life.
  • Noise pollution is causing the problems of mental tension and blood – pressure.
  • Soil pollution is damaging the fertility of the soil.

How to reduce Pollution

Remedy of the Problem : If we take the following steps firmly we may be able to solve the problem of pollution up to some extent :-

  • Protection of our natural forests.
  • Plantation of trees and new forests.
  • Application of anti – pollution gadgets to all vehicles and factories.
  • Development of pollution free fuels.
  • Banning the use of explosives.
  • Banning the testing of nuclear weapons.

Conclusion of Pollution essay
